Section 15

31 May 2024: Thinking today about section 15 of "Song of Myself," where Whitman catalogues the people in his vision of America. A particular cluster always stands out to me:

"The bride unrumples her white dress, the minute-hand of the clock moves slowly,
The opium-eater reclines with rigid head and just-open'd lips,
The prostitute draggles her shawl, her bonnet bobs on her tipsy and pimpled neck,
The crowd laugh at her blackguard oaths, the men jeer and wink to each other,
(Miserable! I do not laugh at your oaths nor jeer you;)
The President holding a cabinet council is surrounded by the great Secretaries,
On the piazza walk three matrons stately and friendly with twined arms..."

In just a few words, each of these people emerges as worthy of our attention. Some of these lines (those about the bride, for instance) operate like like bits of flash fiction. Note that he gives three lines to the prostitute, for whom he feels deep compassion. Note how, even in 1855, Whitman sees the drug addict and finds him worthy of inclusion. And right after this collection--bride, drug addict, sex-worker--he moves to the President--and then moves on just as quickly to describe three older women, bonded by friendship. All are here. All are worthy. All of them (and us) matter. This is democracy rendered (aspirationally) through poetry.

And then he explains it better than I ever could:

"And these tend inward to me, and I tend outward to them,
And such as it is to be of these more or less I am,
And of these one and all I weave the song of myself."

Happy birthday, Walt.

34

30 May 2024: Thirty-four guilty verdicts for the former president. Every once in a while, parts of the system really work.

"Cool It Now"

29 May 2024: I think the Waiting for Impact (with its Michael Bivins content) is to blame for this song being in my head for the past week. I am not complaining: it's such a sweet little bop, with an adorable video that I was happy to revisit.

Here I go again...

28 May 2024: Agreed to take on a big service task today: leading an important search committee (again). I feel okay about it, though, because it's such an important search. I've done it before and this time I am doing it without an entire book to write and without chairing the Faculty Senate. Not excited about it, but feeling okay enough.

Pushing through modernism...

27 May 2024: I have found it more challenging than I thought it would be to return to writing another entry, perhaps because the subject--modernism--is so huge and complicated. Nevertheless, I pushed through it today, getting a decent-enough draft done. I'll revise it tomorrow, add it to the manuscript, and then--gulp!--start thinking about and working on the final pieces.

Little day-trip...

26 May 2024: Had a last minute idea to drive up to Gettysburg for the day. Amy went with me, which was what sealed the deal My friend Steve was giving a talk and I was hadn't been up there in maybe...thirty years? We didn't do much--left around 9, walked around town and shopped, had lunch, walked around some more, heard the lecture, and then headed home. We stopped for ice cream at Ft. Ritchie mostly just to get a look at it after hearing so much about it in my Assistant Dean role (long story). The best part of the day was how sweetly surprised Steve and Kit were to see me (us) there, but it was also just the best to spend the day just ambling and exploring. Made it home around 5:00, only surprising becuase it felt like we did a lot.

May Not-Quite-Still Life

25 May 2024: Initially had the urge to snap this picture as a kind of riff on my "Veronica as Streaming Properties" series. Then I saw Jo's cameo below and had to take it.

Good day here so far; cleaning, laundry, a good walk, and some fun TV. Chill times for the three of us.

Furiosa

24 May 2024: The Mad Max movies aren't my first choice, but they really aren't like anything else, are they? We saw Furiosa this evening and it was a lot of fun; it works in so many ways: action sequences, landscape shots, distinctive and interesting characters, stakes, humor, and, of course, acting.

Coming soon...

23 May 2024: This one's been a long time coming, but it was really cool to see proof in my inbox.

Waiting for Impact

22 Mary 2024: Finally got around to listening to Dave Holmes's fantastic podcast, Waiting for Impact. It's really good, like everyone said.

Here's a bit from episode seven that made me kind of stop in my tracks today (metaphorically, since I was on my walk): thinking about moving through life with audacity, he compares two "yeah"s from Counting Crows: the one at the end of "Rain King" and the one at the end of "Long December." Holmes explains, "All of life can be summed up by those two yeahs. It's easy to be a 'Long December' at this time in history, but the world needs you at a 'Rain King.'"

The momentum continues...

21 May 2024: Got through revisions of eleven entries (!) today. I sat here for a while this evening trying to think of something different to post about, but honestly, this is the vibe these days and I am okay with it. Also love the fact that I did so much revising, but still had time to do some other work, take a walk, and be done in time for trivia. Lovely summer schedule!

Six more to go...

Revising momentum...

20 May 2024: Like I mentioned yesterday, I am making good and quick progress on revising my entries. Even on a day like today--when I had a meeting on campus, a lawn to mow, and some other work to do--I still managed to get through eight of them. And besides being tired (didn't sleep well last night and the lawn sort of wore me out on top of that), I kept wanting to do more.

It's fun to go back and read stuff that I haven't read in months or even well over year. And I am writing this part almost in a whisper...I think it's pretty good?

Anyway, hoping to get through the last 18 (!) this week and knock out the reading and notes for the new entry by the end of this week. Then maybe write that new entry next week?

All of that before the end of May? Amazing if I can pull it off.

Minari, yard work, and a tiny bit of book-work...

19 May 2024: Finally watched Minari today--a perfect movie for before (paused it about an hour in) and after doing a day of yard work (clean-up, weeding, and planting). I found myself laughing out loud, moved to tears, and just captivated by it.

Still getting used to having time on my hands on weekends. There is still lots of book-work to do, but revising is going faster than I anticipated. As a result, I am letting myself treat weekends like, well, weekends, at least so far this summer break. But again, it's hard! By 5:00, I kind of wanted to work and ended up putting in about 90 minutes on book stuff.

"Writing in Wonderland"

18 May 2024: I am so proud of my colleagues, particularly Sadie and Valerie, who organized a terrific event for our NWP site. To see little kids playing around with books, thinking about poetry, and just having a blast? Amazing.

Flying Boxcars!

17 May 2024:

[Catch-up post...]

What fun it was to check out the new ballfield and team in Hagerstown! And couldn't have asked for better company than these friends.

(Jason, full of "dad energy" took the photo for us--and much like my dad, he is good at photos, but not at smiling in them. ;) )

Maybe one more?

16 May 2024: Right now, I am about 2/3 of the way through my first re-read of all the book's entries. So far, I am not hating what I've put together. I've been reading with a million things in mind, one of them being whether or not I need to add entries. Right now I think I definitely need one more: on modernism.

It's interesting; an entry on modernism seems out of place in a book on nineteenth-century American women writers. And modernism basically led to the erasure of so many of the writers I discuss in this book.Yet it comes up in entry after entry. So, it needs some exploration and definition.

"In Too Deep"

15 May 2024: The older I get, the more I appreciate this song. The chorus gets to me--the way it feels like he is talking to himself as much as he is to the other person. It's quiet and whispered in those choruses but then kind of lightly takes off at the end, to who knows where--and that makes the ending kind of fascinating. (Rainy day feels, too!)

(And American Psycho is overrated.)

Primary day...

14 May 2024: Did my civic duty and voted today, so I feel good about that. But these results (from both parties)? They ain't great. Lord help us.

The Go-Between

13 May 2024: So glad to have finally read this novel, which has sat on my bedside table for years. I picked it for this month's book club selection and just fell into it. I love a finely drawn adolescent narrator--someone in that age range that is both terrified and confident, knows so much and knows nothing, tries to read the world around him and gets it wrong as much as he gets it right. I cannot wait to talk about it with the group. Too bad I have to wait nearly three weeks. Whoops!

1600!

12 May 2024: Today marks 1600 (!) straight days of at least 10,000 steps. Pretty darn cool.

Also snapped this very charming picture of Jo today, a day where we spent a lot of time together reading and cleaning (me) and sleeping and playing (her).

Helen's 95th...

11 May 2024: Stopped by the 95th birthday party my neighbor John was hosting for his wife Helen at the Community Club. Nearly 140 RSVP'd "yes," a clear sign of how much people love them both. John and Helen--who live right across the street from me--are moving soon and I'll miss them, but I am so glad to have known them.

"Don't This Road"

10 May 2024: Was starting to think about finishing up a day of revising and this version of "Don't This Road" came on and stopped me in my tracks...

Settling into that summer schedule...

9 May 2024: Today was the first day since the semester ended that I was able to work from home all day and only focus on book revisions. No meetings. No other work-related distractions. Just editing and revising.

A trip to the grocery store in the morning and a mid-afternoon walk split the day up a bit, but in good ways.

Hoping for the same schedule tomorrow and many, many more days to come between now and the fall semester.

Some good meetings...

8 May 2024: I had a truly awful work-related meeting yesterday, so I am especially grateful for three very good meetings today--each quite different from the other.

The first was with the group of colleagues who are working on our NWP Summer Institute. We've got such a good team and I found myself so excited to be working with them on this.

The second was an unexpected lunch "meeting" with my friends Steve and Jim. Always lovely to spend time with them.

The third was my last monthtly Faculty Sentate President meeting with the University President, this time accompanied by my successor, Larry. Feels good to be done with this and see it pass to someone who will do an amazing job.

The Life and Times of Hannah Crafts

7 May 2024: Found myself genuinely emotional at the ending of Greg Hecimovich's amazing book on Hannah Crafts.

The Fall Guy

6 May 2024: The Fall Guy is such a fun movie. I smiled and laughed the whole time. Cannot get over Ryan Goslings endless buckets of charisma.

Midsommar

5 May 2024: Had a great time at a screening of Midsommar at the Opera House today, a sequel to the event we did for The Wicker Man last October. Kel, a student who was on the panel with faculty members, was so impressive, polished, and fun.

Graduation 2024...

4 May 2024: Another commencement in the books. My second (and last) time on the platform and carrying the big old mace. The ceremonies themselves were joyous and lovely. Feeling a bit melancholy about it all tonight: an exhausting year on campus and a great group of students (always the best part) moving on (as they should). Next year looks to be exhausting, too, which is hard not to think about.

But for now, I am just going to try to let my brain take the rest of the night off.

Graduation practice...

3 March 2024: Since I've finished up as Senate President, this is the last year I'll need to participate in graduation rehearsals as a member of the platform party. Very glad about the "not being President" part, but practice is kind of fun, if only because everyone is in a good mood, a prelude to the good mood that will fill tomorrow.

Also got to attend a graduation party for a former student who is now finishing her MA program. Perfect weather for a celebration at Morgan's Grove. Spent time with more awesome people. Just a terrific day.

End-of-the-year celebration...

2 May 2024: What fun it was to welcome the Sigma Tau Delta students to my house for an end-of-the-semester celebration! First "big" gathering here since the pre-COVID days.

Surprise tenant...

1 May 2024: Getting the back patio ready for a Sigma Tau Delta party scheduled for tomorrow, I made a couple of discoveries in the patio storage bench. First...a snake skin. Then...well, you can probably guess.

Felt a bit bad asking him/her to relocate, given that shedding can (I think?) wear them out, but we both decided it was for the best.
