24 March 2016: Another reminder today of how social media can do lovely things: one of my best friends from when I was kid--someone I hadn't spoken to in probably a decade until we reconnected on Facebook years ago--sent me a message today with this picture in it.
It's a statue of my man Walt at Bear Mountain Zoo/Park in New York. My old friend was there with her kids for a nice afternoon, complete with picnic. Look at that statue--that stride, those clothes...that's Walt. Love it. And love that she saw it and thought of me.Walt would be proud.

Facebook as personal narrative
I read this piece (through a link from the Daily Dish) last night and it gave me chills. We put so much of ourselves online these days--and I don't think that's inherently bad. One unintended consequence--Facebook creates a narrative of one woman's life and very sad death.

When studies contradict each other...
...I usually go with the one that makes me feel better. So here's a study that says Facebook users have lower average grades. And here's one that says that, with the exception of internet addicts, people who do a lot web surfing during their breaks are more productive at work. I'm going to go with the second--all this surfing and posting makes me more productive at times since I tend to use web-breaks and blogging as mini-rewards for accomplishing tasks. This post, for instance, is a mini-reward for finishing writing part of a final exam.
(And yes, I realize that these studies don't actually contradict each other at all.)

Pride and Prejudice on Facebook
You remember Hamlet on Facebook, right? Well, this one is a lot of fun, too. I wonder if I should assign this kind of exercise in an intro to lit class. Might be cool...
